Got a backflow test notice?

Your water utility sends these every year. Here's what the letter means and how we handle it for you.

What it is
A backflow preventer is a valve assembly that stops water on your property from flowing back into the public water supply. It's usually near your water meter or on your irrigation line.
Why you got the letter
These devices have to be tested every year, and your utility tracks the deadline. Missing it can lead to penalties from the utility.
What we do
We test the device, repair or replace it if it fails, and file the results with your utility for you.
What to have ready
The letter (it lists your account and device), and clear access to the device.

Hurricane season plumbing checklist

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. A few minutes now can save a flooded house later.

Before the storm

  • Find your main water shut-off and make sure it turns.
  • Fill bathtubs and buckets for flushing toilets, and store drinking water.
  • Evacuating? Shut off the main water valve and turn off your water heater at the breaker or gas valve.
  • Clear yard drains and gutters so rain can run off.
  • On septic? Have it pumped before the season if it's due. A full tank backs up faster in soaked ground.

During an outage

  • If your utility issues a boil water notice, boil water or use bottled water for drinking and cooking.
  • Septic with a lift pump? Use as little water as you can. The pump can't run without power.
  • Keep an electric water heater off at the breaker until power is steady again.

After the storm

  • If floodwater reached your water heater, don't use it until it's checked.
  • Don't run gas appliances that sat in water until they're inspected.
  • Watch for leaks, slow drains and sewage backups. Call us if you see any.
  • When a boil water notice is lifted, flush your taps the way your utility tells you to.
